Expertise Driven by Quality and Innovation

Belloy’s Vast Experience

Over the past 45 years Belloy Petroleum Consulting Ltd. has worked for 100’s of companies both domestically and internationally. Our collective expertise covers vertical, directional, horizontal, SAGD, coring / delineation, and multi-lateral wellbore designs. Our associates have complete familiarity with the latest hydrocarbon detection methods, MWD-LWD technology and wireline logging equipment currently being utilized across the market.

Geosteering Remote & Onsite

Geosteering is a key technique used in horizontal and directional drilling to optimize well placement in complex subsurface formations. Geosteering allows real-time adjustments to the wellbore trajectory based on downhole data, ensuring that the wellbore stays within the most productive reservoir zones.

  • Belloy began Remote Geosteering in 2006 and continues to be a market leader in both remote and on-site geosteering to date.
  • Primary formations Belloy has geosteered include Montney, Duvernay, Clearwater, McMurray, Waseca, Sparky, Viking, Bluesky, Charlie Lake, and Cardium.
  • Our Geosteering roster includes top senior geologists with experience across a wide range of formations and multiple Geosteering softwares (StarSteer, ZoneVu, Trasform, SES, etc.)

Delineation and Coring Programs

Our geological services include extensive experience with delineation and coring programs, which are essential for exploring and evaluating subsurface reservoirs. In fact, these programs help reduce exploration risks, enhance drilling strategies, and increase production efficiency. Additionally, our geologists have worked on delineation and coring projects across the entire WCSB, which further strengthens our expertise and ensures comprehensive service. As a result, we are well-equipped to support our clients throughout the exploration and drilling process. Specifically, they have gained valuable experience in major formations such as:

McMurray (Alberta):

  • Delineation Focus: Sand thickness, bitumen quality, water table mapping.
  • Coring Purpose: Saturation, grain size, clay content, cap rock integrity

Bakken (Saskatchewan & Manitoba):

  • Delineation Focus: Pressure regime, rock brittleness.
  • Coring Purpose: Fracture analysis, geochemistry, source rock potential

Grand Rapids (Alberta):

  • Delineation Focus: Reservoir connectivity, water content.
  • Coring Purpose: Porosity, permeability, wettability studies.

Clearwater (Alberta & Saskatchewan):

  • Delineation Focus: Oil saturation, reservoir thickness.
  • Coring Purpose: Viscosity, sand structure, gas content

Montney (British Columbia & Alberta):

  • Delineation Focus: Overpressure zones, fluid phase changes, porosity variations.
  • Coring Purpose: Reservoir quality (mineralogy, brittleness for fracking)

Duvernay (Alberta):

  • Delineation Focus: Thermal maturity, pressure gradients.
  • Coring Purpose: TOC (Total Organic Carbon) analysis, porosity, permeability.

Viking (Alberta & Saskatchewan):

  • Delineation Focus: Facies distribution, porosity trends.
  • Coring Purpose: Lithology, fracture density, reservoir fluid properties

SAGD and Thermal Horizontal Programs

Our geological services also include expertise in advanced extraction methods such as SAGD (Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage) and Thermal Horizontal programs. Over the years, our experienced geologists have successfully contributed to both types of projects across a wide range of formations. As a result, we bring valuable insights and practical knowledge to every thermal recovery operation.

SAGD process:
  • First, it injects steam into the reservoir through an upper well.
  • As a result, the steam heats the bitumen, reducing its viscosity.
  • Finally, this process allows the bitumen to drain into a lower well for extraction.

Thermal Horizontal programs:

  • Specifically, they use horizontal wells and heat to reduce bitumen viscosity.
  • Consequently, this improves bitumen flow to the surface.
  • Moreover, they are particularly effective in complex geological formations.
Key formations:
  • McMurray Formation – considered the premier SAGD target due to its exceptional reservoir quality. As a result, it is highly sought after for thermal recovery projects.
  • Emerging formations of interest:
    1. Clearwater
    2. Grand Rapids
    3. Bluesky

Multilateral Horizontal Programs

Our geological services also support multilateral horizontal programs, where multiple horizontal wells are drilled from a single vertical wellbore. This method significantly increases contact with the reservoir. Consequently, it allows operators to access more oil-bearing zones and efficiently cover a larger area of the formation.

  • Belloy has been covering multi-lateral horizontals since the 2010s. Furthermore, our long-standing experience in this area ensures we can efficiently address the complexities associated with these wells.
  • Experience with a variety of well designs depending on reservoir properties (Fishbone, Feather, Waffle, etc.).
  • Primary formations include Clearwater, Bluesky, Mannville Stack.

Specialized Projects

Our geological services also support specialized energy projects, ranging from unconventional resource extraction—such as shale gas—to advanced storage solutions like carbon capture and storage. Moreover, we are committed to delivering tailored solutions for each project. This ensures both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability.

  • Shale Gas – For example, it uses hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling for efficient recovery.
  • Potash – In particular, it is mined for fertilizer production through solution or underground mining.
  • CBM – Specifically, coalbed methane is extracted from coal seams using dewatering and depressurization.
  • Geothermal – Moreover, it involves harnessing heat from the Earth’s subsurface for sustainable power generation.
  • Helium – Typically, it is found in natural gas reservoirs in association with nitrogen-rich or hydrocarbon-bearing formations.
  • Carbon Capture Utilization Storage – CCUS is the process of capturing CO₂ emissions and storing them underground to effectively reduce environmental impact.

These projects, therefore, require expertise in geology, drilling, and resource management to ensure efficient and sustainable extraction. Additionally, our team integrates these areas of expertise to optimize every stage of the process.

On & Offshore International Projects

Belloy Geologists’ international offshore and onshore projects span key energy markets across the globe. In particular, our team has contributed to exploration and development efforts in diverse regions, supporting clients in achieving their goals in both established and emerging energy sectors.

  • USA – We focus on shale gas and unconventional oil development, utilizing advanced drilling and fracking technologies. Moreover, this approach enhances production efficiency.
  • Asia – Our emphasis is on coalbed methane (CBM) and shale gas exploration, which helps meet the region’s growing energy demands. Additionally, we adapt our methods to local conditions for optimal results.
  • Africa – We are involved in heavy oil and gas projects, leveraging our expertise in reservoir management to maximize resource extraction. As a result, we ensure long-term operational success.
  • South America – We specialize in heavy crude extraction and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, which improve recovery rates and overall production efficiency.

These projects require tailored geological assessments combined with cutting-edge extraction methods. As a result, we are able to optimize both efficiency and sustainability, even in the most diverse and challenging environments.
